Call for Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship Proposals

TIRF is pleased to announce new doctoral dissertation fellowships, funded by a gracious donation by Sheik Nahayan, UAE Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research. These fellowships will fund research in English language teaching for the next three years. The deadline for application is February 29, 2008.

The International Research Foundation for English Language Education was created in 1999 as
an international, non-profit foundation. Its aim is to generate new knowledge and to collect and
organize existing knowledge about the teaching and learning of English as a second or foreign
language for the purposes of informing educational policy; improving classroom practices; and,
ultimately, expanding educational, occupational, and social opportunities for individuals in a
global society. The Foundation is governed by a Board of Trustees comprised of scholars,
authors, and individuals from the corporate sector. TIRF is supported by charitable donations.

Sheikh Nahayan Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship Features
• Each fellowship will be in the amount of US $ 25,000. The first installment will be in the
amount of US $ 12,500. The second installment will be paid when TIRF receives clear
evidence that the fellowship recipient has made substantial progress toward completing the
research project.
• Research involving multiple research methods (e.g., qualitative and quantitative approaches)
is encouraged.
• Research that involves the synthesis of existing data sets and research findings will also be
• No grant funds can be used to cover indirect costs or university overhead.
• Additional sources of funding applied for or received for the same research project or a larger
project should be declared. Note: seeking or obtaining other sources of funding for the
project does not prevent you from applying for the Sheikh Nahayan Doctoral Dissertation
Fellowship. However, it is important that you state the unique contribution that receiving this
fellowship would make to your doctoral research project.
